I also love and understand free speech. However, if somebody had been stealing documents from President Obama’s desk I’m pretty sure that I’d have considered that a crime that should be investigated. If a senior official inside the Obama Administration were to have written an op-ed that they were actively working to undermine President Obama I’d have been quite alarmed. Is the op-ed a confession of a crime? Trump doesn’t respect the rule of law, for example his complaint when two republicans were just charged with crimes prior to easy re-election in the mid-terms, but in this case I wonder if Trumps demand for an investigation and his usual conspiracy theory are reasonable?

You are right, John. And that fact just highlights how Trump threatens democracy. He is so disrespectful of the limits on his power that his own senior staff feel the need to thwart his worst impulses, probably illegally — leading to a second threat, beyond Trump himself: un-elected government staff thwarting the will of the elected president.

In other words, democracy is under threat both from Trump and from the the extraordinary steps other players take to limit the harm he does.
